When you are looking at the keys on your piano or keyboard you will notice that there are two kinds of keys. There are white keys and there are black keys. Today we are only going to focus on the white keys. See how there are rows of black keys in between the white keys? They are in groups of two or three. Starting from the white key to the left of a group of two black keys it goes CDEFGABC, ignoring all the black keys. Remember, we are only learning the white keys today. C is white, and then the next white key is D, then E and so on until you have gone all the way up to the next C. The cycle is then looped as you go up through the octaves. If you play the white keys starting from C and ending at the next C you will have played a C Major scale. This is one of the most commonly used scales that we learn when starting out. From the Major scale all of the other scales are made. Remember, CDEFGABC.
